A solo travel memoir

Fresh OffThe Plane

Chaos and commitment issues across seven countries and nine years.

“I had long had a commitment problem with countries.”
Cover of Fresh Off The Plane by Hannah Radcliffe

About the book

She was very good at leaving.

At twenty, Hannah Radcliffe got on a plane to Sweden and found out she had a talent for going. Over the next nine years she taught English to shouting sixth-graders in South Korea, moved in with two Spanish strangers in Galicia, chased cheap flights out of Taipei, and washed up on a beach in Thailand with a short contract and no plan after it.

She never stayed anywhere longer than two years. She was never entirely sure whether she was building a life or dodging one.

Fresh Off The Plane is the story of what all that leaving cost and what it was worth.

And it is about the strangest destination of the lot: coming home to California for good, and discovering that staying might be the harder trip.

About Hannah

Hannah Radcliffe

Hannah studied abroad in Sweden, worked a season in Australia, taught English in South Korea, Spain and Taiwan, and taught kindergarten in Thailand. Somewhere in there she learned to bow, to ride a scooter badly, and to make peace with a rice cooker.

She now lives in Northern California with her husband and their dog, forty-five minutes from the town she grew up in. She still travels. These days she comes back.

Fresh Off The Plane is her first book.

Where the stories started

Parts of this book began as blog posts written from a classroom in Jhubei and a rented room in Phuket. The blog is still going, and it is where the newer trips end up first.
